Darwin Harbour Disappointment

Disappointment in the harbour! I guess you have some of these days on the water.

First: Second cast of the day I hooked a trevally, my totally lax drag fooled me into thinking it might have been edible.
Second: Soon afterwards Mud hooked a barra, hard to say size 50-60 so could have been table fish, to have it spit the hook at the boat
Third: Later in the day I saw something swirling up near a drain, soon enough I hook a barra 65-70 so a nice fish, he charged towards the boat, jumped at the boat, I kept a tight line, but about a second after getting back underwater he spat the hook.
Fourth: In desperation I headed over to where I got the fish in December to find there were zero drains… my only guess it was affected by rainwater last time, but I thought I had a secret spot but now I realise I’ve got nothing.

Got:
Me: Small Trevelly and smaller cod
Mud: Nothing

Story of the trip:
Probably losing that barra, but let’s be positive, zero boat problems, not much chop, no rain, mild day temperature wise, also launched from dinah beach so zero travel time.

Boat problems:
Nothing! Even better I realised that I am an idiot who wasn’t switching my batteries over last time, so the problems that I thought I had were incorrect.

Adelaide Bridge in 2015

First trip since the break and it was pretty uneventful. The original plan was going to be Bynoe but given the winds and my reluctance to drive such a distance when a storm could roll through, we went to the Adelaide Mouth. Only got one hit for zero fish. Stopped by the famous Kai and Goat Island. Good to get out om the water but a very quiet day.

Got:
Me, Mud, Mud’s daughter – nothing

Story of the trip:
Not much to report really, didn’t get rained on which is always a bonus at this time of year. The water was very dirty and we only found a few good colour changes, but it didn’t produce anything.

Boat problems:
My boat is shorting out if it gets swapped to battery 2. Things were okay as I could just run it off the main one, but really annoying, this is a brand new battery, also my first ‘boat problem’ that has repeated itself, i.e. the rest I could think ‘well who knows when the last time X was looked at’ but this time I know… brand new, July

Phillip Island land based

Thought I would include this one as I did some land based fishing with the old man when I was down for a holiday. Not a lot to report, got a grass whiting and a few other bites, but the wind basically made it impossible to fish two days in a row the sand was pelting into us and we had to call it early. Still nice to get one, nice part of Victoria.

Got:
No keepers

Story of the trip:
Having to purchase a *shudder* fishing license

Boat problems:
Was a land based trip

Success in the Harbour!

A blind squirrel will eventually find some nuts!! Smashed it, at least, smashed it for me. The day started out badly with jprbeard not showing up at my place, I waited 30 odd minutes, but he wasn’t returning phone calls or texts… (hope he just slept it and it a bit sheepish, as I still haven’t heard back) so I went to Palmertson boat ramp and grabbed one of the land fisherman to give me a hand launching, and thought I might as well take him for the ride. He got a jack 45cm but had to get out at 11am and i wanted to fish through until 2. As the low rolled over I had scouted a mud bank I liked the look off… boom! Got a great threadie, netted him by myself easily. About 20 minutes later I surprised myself (wasn’t near a snake or drain, just a mud bank) by hitting a good barra! He fought like all hell, look a crap load of line off me (it was pretty loose as there weren’t any rocks around) but I got him to the boat. The netting by myself this time was a disaster, he managed to wrap himself in my line haha, was lucky I got him in the end. But I did!

Got:
Darren: 45cm Mangrove Jack
Me: 72cm (from tip of tail) Threadfin Salmon & 66cm Barra

Story of the trip:
Well it’s the last trip for 5 weeks for me (holidays) and I haven’t caught a nice keeper since the the run off so pretty stoked with that.

Boat problems:
NOTHING!!!!!!!!!
Looks like everything is coming up milhouse

3 snaps for celebrate the end of the year:

Catfish in the Adelaide

Got very luck with the weather, overcast without rain all day. Not much breeze. No luck with the Barra or the Jewfish we were chasing. Got some blue salmon on the lures. Tons of catfish on bait. Mud also managed to get a pretty impressive catfish.

Got:
Me: 3 blue salmon keepers
Mud: couple of tiny barra, very large catfish

Story of the trip:
Loads of catfish on the bait, frustrating we were literally getting nothing else. What is worse – getting nothing or getting catfish?

Boat problems:
Practically nothing. I have  lost the nozzle for the earphone/flushing mechanism for the motor. Was able to do it by holding the hose there. Will need to get a new one no big deal.
Very much hoping I am on a good streak here.
