Darwin Harbour – Boat Ramps

Lots of good boat ramps in the harbour, the two best are Dinah Beach and the Palmerston one, which are basically accessible at all tides.

Check out the government website

Although when it comes to Channel Island Boat ramp keep in mind they are LYING and I have emailed them to tell them otherwise. You need about 3m to access it, 3.5 to do it comfortably. You want around 5 to be protected from the breakwall. And importantly, when the tide is coming in, and the wind is in the right direction, you are being blown directly against the shore. Not so bad if you have enough water, but I smashed my transducer thinking I could get out with 2.5m given the website says “most tides”. Also I emailed them, they said they would change it, which they have not.

The harbour is generally overfished, especially for deep water fish like Golden Snapper. You won’t get as much here as if you travel, but of course it is so close….

Florence Falls – Litchfield

Florence Falls is a good waterfall and swimming spot in Litchfield. It is paved and accessible by lots of steps. It is always crowded, you will be lucky to get in there on a Saturday or Sunday. If you have a 2WD go for it, otherwise I would use your car to get away from the crowds.

Most people have been here, it is very popular. On one hand, you can’t go to Litchfield and miss out. On the other hand, crowded swimming holes and crowded parking lots isn’t how I like to spend my time in a National Park.

The falls in the wet

Motorcar Falls – Kakadu

You need to go down a dirt track for a while, lots of corrugation but nothing too bad. The walk is moderate and you need to ensure you know where you are going, because it isn’t signposted very well. I also believe there are other falls to visit along that track, I hope I have the chance to check them all out. It is a good walk to do in the wet, assuming the access report allows you to. I would say the walk is “moderate”. If swimming is your only goal, there are easier places to go like Maguk. Motorcar is a great place to go, but it wouldn’t be on top of my list, more like the place to go when you have seen a lot of Kakadu.
